Recycling Information

The Town of Loomis encourages businesses to recycle wherever possible. Many local businesses and schools participate in recycling programs for cardboard, aluminum cans, glass, and office paper recycling. Some deliver their own recyclables directly to the Recycling Center behind Raley's. Recology also provides special bins for materials to be recycled. Looking for a convenient way to recycle? Try the voluntary "Blue Bag" recycling program. Town of Loomis residents are provided blue bags for free by Recology. Place the "blue bags" either inside or beside your garbage can. Bundle and tie large cardboard and place it next to your garbage can. Please call Recology at (530) 885-3735 to request bags to be delivered, or if you have questions.

·        Recycle bottles and cans at the NexCycle California Redemption Value (CRV) buy back center behind Raleys (Call 909-796-2210 for hours). Most beverages other than milk, wine and distilled spirits are subject to CRV.

·        You can save over 40% of your quarterly garbage bill by using free blue bags to recycle, a free green waste toter and providing your own 32-gallon garbage can. Sign up with Recology at 530-885-3735.

·        You can redeem money by returning valuable CRV glass, plastic, and aluminum beverage containers to the buy-back center behind Raley's.

 

Recology provides a 96-gallon green toter to be used exclusively for green waste at no extra charge. Recology picks up the green waste on a separate route and transports the material to the Western Placer Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The green waste is shredded, screened, then placed into large piles to produce compost for resale from the MRF.

 

You can also bring your green waste directly to the MRF and have it composted there for a significantly discounted rate compared to landfilling.The MRF is located at: 3033 Fiddyment Rd. (entrance on Athens Ave.), Roseville, CA 95747 near the Thunder Valley casino.

 Grasscycling

Grasscycling is a method used to keep grass clippings out of the waste stream. It is the natural recycling of grass by leaving clippings on the lawn after mowing. A mulching mower allows the clippings to be left on the soil to decompose, returning valuable nutrients back to the soil. Grasscycling is simple, easy, and it works!

 

If you use one or more 90-gallon toters for your residential garbage and could cut down to a 32-gallon can by wasting less and recycling more, you could drop your quarterly bill by 40% or more. Just provide your own can and sign up with Recology at (530) 885-3735.

Reducing or reusing are other alternatives to help waste less:

·        Use www.CraigsList.com, www.eBay.com, www.freecycle.com and other electronic services to trade new and used goods

·        Donate furniture, goods and clothes to thrift stores and buy products from them.

·        Donate and buy stuff from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Roseville, 8280 Industrial Ave Roseville, CA 95678 (916) 797-8673

·        Look for less packaging in products you buy (e.g., buy cereal in bags)

·        Keep reusable bags in your car for shopping

·        Keep reusable food containers in your car for leftovers from dining out

·        Reuse materials used in packaging food products and reuse containers for storage

·        Exchange magazines with friends or neighbors, or donate to any waiting room

·        Businesses use returnable shipping containers and returnable pallets

·        Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without (this was a slogan of the Great Depression – a reminder of how to get by in current economic times)

Electronic products nearing the end of their useful life (e-Waste) contain hazardous substances like lead and mercury and the State has banned them from being discarded in the regular trash, landfills or incinerators. Qualified e-waste collectors and recyclers offer collection events in Loomis periodically, including events at Loomis Elementary School (see www.loomisptc.org) and at Spring and Fall Cleanups organized by Recology at the parking lot of Del Oro High School. Loomis Self Storage, 5950 Jetton Lane (off Swetzer) works with Greenspot Dropoff to recycle e-waste regularly (Call 916-652-1314 for hours). Another local e-waste recycler is Sims Recycling Solutions, 8855 Washington Boulevard, Roseville, CA 95678, 916-746-7300. Others can be found via www.erecycle.org.

Household hazardous wastes (HHW) are illegal to dispose of with household garbage and include: electronics, paints, household batteries and cleaners, automotive batteries and fluids etc. These items are accepted free for residents at the MRF’s HHW facility (and for a fee for businesses). Free drop-off for home-generated sharps is also available at the MRF. Sharps must be placed in a rigid plastic container to be accepted. Free containers are available while supplies last.
